Discipleship Strategy

Our youth ministry strategy has four components (Encounter, Establish, Equip, Engage) to disciple youth along a sequential continuum.  Each component adds depth in the teaching and requires a greater level of commitment from the students.  The name “Journey” describes our belief that the Christian walk is a lifelong process of following Christ. This is a challenging path, and the goal is to keep moving forward and growing deeper relationships with God and with each other.

By the end of high school, students will have been encouraged to come to a personal and corporate faith in Christ, read through the Bible, invite friends to join the Journey, memorize strategic passages of Scripture, and use your spiritual gifts.  We have developed a four-step process that allows students to get involved right away and reach for higher levels of participation.

Featured Events are monthly activities designed to attract students to come and ENCOUNTER our youth ministry and hear the Gospel.  The guiding principle is to create a place where teens feel energized, welcomed & accepted, and will want to bring friends to.

Journey Club meetings offer a place and time for students to ESTABLISH a relationship with Christ and with their peers.  The meetings include times of getting to know one another, worship, and spiritual encouragement.  The discussions are accessible to students from all spiritual backgrounds.  The club meeting is for all youth that are looking for friendship, fellowship, and spiritual direction.

Journey Study meetings is designed to EQUIP students to spend time in the Word of God, think Biblically, understand spiritual identity, and enhance confidence in Christ.  Students are also encouraged to be involved in spiritual disciplines like Scripture memory and daily devotions.

The Leader In Training (LIT) program gives students an opportunity to ENGAGE others with the Gospel.  Students are placed in a suitable ministry while being supported through specific training and mentoring.  The LIT program gives students an opportunity to learn how to serve, develop their spiritual gifts, and become a witness for Jesus Christ in both lifestyle and message.

What If I Have Not Been involved in AWANA Before?

The Journey ministry is the high school program of AWANA.  Many students come to FBC without having ever attended AWANA.  The Journey program is specifically designed to encourage students to bring unchurched friends—so ALL youth will be encouraged to attend and participate in the Journey Study, even if they are not working towards the Citation Award. The teachers will facilitate in such a way as to accommodate those without an AWANA background.  If students prefer to attend a different learning environment on Sunday morning, they can attend an adult Sunday school class.
